AST1 Refresher

One day field based course reviewing the AST1 skills of terrain management, companion rescue and decision making. AST1 is a prerequisite.

1 field day. (some pre study required)

What you will learn:

If you’ve taken an avalanche course in the past but would like to learn the most updated, best practices for companion rescue and transceiver use, or if you want to brush up on general basic skills, this course is for you. New in 2022, Avalanche Canada has created the AST1 Refresher Course. This is a recognized avalanche course like any other, and comes with a certificate. You will need to do some pre reading and study, including knowing the avalanche forecast for the area. This is a great option for people who want to update or refresh their skills but not to completely re take their AST1 course, and is also an beginning of season refresher for people who have previously taken more advanced courses such as AST2.

An AST 1 is a minimum of two days with both classroom and field components. You need to take this course first and so should your friends because just one person trained in a group is not enough. Everyone in your group should take an AST 1. An AST1 is the first part of the AST program, or “Part 1” of a two-part course.
